The Science of Reading

The Science of Reading refers to research evidence from a variety of fields that describes how children learn to read and write.  The Science of Reading is not an approach, curriculum, or company but rather an attempt to provide the best available information to promote effective literacy instruction.

Understanding the Science of Literacy

We use the term Science of Literacy because it encompasses reading and writing. Reading and writing are interdependent language skills that develop concurrently. The foundations of literacy learning include:

  • Oral language
  • Print concepts
  • Phonological awareness
  • Letter knowledge
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading fluency
  • Spelling/Orthography
  • Comprehension/Thinking
